HELIX Leads Workshops for Girls to Encourage Careers in Science and Engineering

      March 9, 2015

ExpandingYourHorizonsTwo HELIX environmental planners led hands-on workshops aimed to interest girls, aged 11 to 16, in science, math, and engineering as a part of the Expanding Your Horizons conference held at USD on Saturday. As HELIX’s 5th year participating, this year’s activity gave students, primarily 8th and 9th grade girls, a taste of what it is like to be environmental planners and landscape architects.  Students worked as teams of consultants to plan and design a new community to include incorporating schools, businesses, roadways, parks, and bike trails, while considering environmental issues such as preservation of sensitive habitat, Native American cultural resource sites, air quality, noise control, and traffic.
