HELIX Environmental Planning (HELIX) biologists and Construction Group staff worked with a commercial developer to design and restore approximately 20 acres of native habitats on the site of the historic Carlsbad Raceway. The project involved restoration of both upland and wetland habitats to create a contiguous open space preserve. Project planning included creation of habitat restoration plans, as well as landscape scale plans outlining the location of the restoration effort and describing the habitats to be created. Restoration activities included a mixture of habitat creation and enhancement, encompassing both riparian and adjacent upland areas. Specific activities included biological monitoring, planting, seeding maintenance and biological monitoring of the restoration areas.
