During the 2026 Society for California Archaeology (SCA) Conference held in Palm Springs, California, Principal Cultural Resources Specialist Mary Robbins-Wade, RPA was presented with the 2026 Emma Lou Davis Mentorship Award. This prestigious award instituted by the Women in California Archaeology (WCA) committee and the Coalition for California Diversity (CDCA) honors archaeologists who have significantly mentored women and underrepresented communities in the discipline. The award is named after Emma Lou Davis, a renowned archaeologist whose pioneering work has paved the way for a more diverse field today.

Over the course of her more than 45 years in the discipline, Mary has contributed greatly not only to the field of archaeology in California, but she has also mentored countless archaeologists at all stages of their careers, from entry-level staff to emerging leaders, guiding them through complex projects and teaching the skills to empower them for growth and advancement. The award acknowledges these contributions and making archaeology a more equitable and diverse space.

For decades, Mary has been a visible and active presence across the industry and in groups, societies, and volunteer initiatives that strengthen both the archaeological profession and the broader community. She has supported organizations such as the San Diego Archaeological Center, the San Diego County Archaeological Society, and the Society for California Archaeology through memberships, participation on boards, and hands-on volunteer service.

Sharing thoughts on Mary’s leadership approach, HELIX’s Cultural Resources Project Manager Nikki Falvey and Senior Archaeologist James Turner explained, “Mary is honest, yet kind. Wise, yet humble. Her compassion knows no bounds, and she builds confidence in her mentees by encouraging them to take on difficult projects and grow into leadership roles. She pushes them to be detail-oriented, efficient, patient, and fair. She demonstrates that meeting project goals can go hand in hand with maintaining a positive work environment. She understands that laughter brings trust, and trust strengthens relationships.”

Mary has opened doors for individuals at all stages of their careers, and her influence continues to ripple outward, inspiring new generations of cultural resource professionals.

“We’re so proud to see Mary recognized for the mentorship and leadership she has shown throughout her career,” said Shelby Howard, HELIX Chief Executive Officer. “Her commitment to supporting and developing others, both within HELIX and across the field of archaeology, has shaped countless careers, and her positive impact will continue for decades to come.”
