HELIX is seeking a motivated, experienced As-Needed Biologist with critical thinking skills and a strong work ethic to join our Northern California team. HELIX currently has opportunities with our current projects in surrounding regions (i.e. San Francisco Bay, Sierra Nevada Foothills, and San Joaquin Valley). HELIX provides CEQA/NEPA, biological, cultural resource management, habitat restoration, regulatory permitting, landscape architecture, environmental compliance monitoring, acoustics and noise control, air quality and greenhouse gas, and GIS services to both the public and private sectors.

The As-Needed Field Biologist position provides support to our biology team throughout the year, especially during our busy field season in the spring. This position is an as-needed position and is utilized to supplement our full-time workforce. You will not be guaranteed a minimum number of hours.

The ideal candidate must possess excellent communication and collaboration skills as working closely with HELIX team members is essential to the success of this position. Strong analytical skills, a positive attitude, flexible mindset, and adaptability to changing circumstances is imperative.

Duties May Include

  • Conducting terrestrial biological monitoring.
  • Conducting special-status species surveys.
  • Conducting environmental compliance monitoring and reporting
  • Authoring technical documents

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in an environmental science, biology or related field (degree in biochemistry or microbiology not acceptable).
  • One year of professional experience (outside of academic requirements) related to terrestrial biology, including experience with an environmental consulting firm.
  • Northern California experience conducting terrestrial construction monitoring and/or conducting surveys for terrestrial biological resources.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Northern California terrestrial flora and fauna.
  • Experience with terrestrial field data collection methods and equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining accurate field notes and maps, project files, work logs, etc.
  • Must be able to hike long distances over varying terrain under varying weather conditions.
  • Valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record over the last three years

Qualifications Considered a Plus

  • Agency permits to survey for California red-legged frog, foothill yellow-legged frog, Alameda whipsnake, California tiger salamander, salt march harvest mouse, Ridgway’s rail, dusky footed woodrat and/or other listed and special-status species.
  • Experience conducting nesting bird surveys including protocol surveys for Swainson’s hawk and Burrowing Owl surveys
  • Demonstrated experience preparing biological monitoring reports.
  • Experience conducting jurisdictional delineations, California Rapid Assessment Method (CRAM) analyses, or habitat restoration monitoring.

Salary

Hourly wages will be based on qualifications and/or experience. Expected starting pay range of $27 to $40 per hour.

This is an as-needed position to supplement our full-time biology team during the busy season, or as required due to work demand. You will not be guaranteed a minimum number of hours.
