As-Needed Biological Field Technicians – Tuolumne County

HELIX is currently seeking multiple as-needed biological Field Technicians for our Biological Resources Team for approximately six (6) months of work in Tuolumne County beginning in March or April 2024. Lodging and meals per diem are included. HELIX is a full-service environmental firm providing biological, cultural resources, landscape architecture, regulatory permitting, acoustical, air quality, habitat restoration, and GIS services to public and private clients across a variety of sectors.

As-Needed Field Technician responsibilities include conducting focused plant surveys (native and non-native) and flagging in remote and rugged terrain under the direction of a crew leader, digital data collection including photography, completion of daily logs, and daily communication with supervising crew leader and the Project Manager. Additional responsibilities may include background research. Candidates must be comfortable with strenuous hiking and working in remote, rugged areas with potentially adverse cold or heat conditions, sometimes for extended periods; be knowledgeable of the biological and botanical resources of the Sierra Nevada Mountains or Stanislaus National Forest; be self-motivated and possess strong written and verbal communication skills; and work well under the direction of others. Successful candidates will have a positive team-oriented attitude.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in an environmental science, biology or related field (degree in biochemistry or microbiology not acceptable). Consideration may be made for candidates currently enrolled in college-level classes pending commitment to project schedule and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting flora and/or fauna surveys
  • Knowledge of the biological and botanical resources of Tuolumne County, northern and central Sierra Nevada Mountains, or Stanislaus National Forest
  • Ability to identify targeted botanical native species and non-native species using a project specific field guide.
  • Possess a valid California Driver’s License and 3 years clean driving record; also reliable transportation
  • Ability to do strenuous hiking and work full days in remote, rugged mountain areas
  • Demonstrate strong written/verbal communication skills

Additional skills considered a plus:

  • Experience conducting flora and/or fauna surveys in Northern California
  • Experience using GPS/GIS systems in the field and office
  • Environmental consulting or government agency experience in an environmental capacity
  • Experience working on projects that have involved local, state, and/or federal agencies
  • Possession of permits to survey for federal or state-listed species
  • An advanced degree, such as a master’s degree in environmental science, biology or related field

Salary

Hourly wages will be based on qualifications and/or experience. Expected starting pay range of $25 to $45 per hour.
