Michael Schwerin

Chief Executive Officer/President & Board Chair

Under Michael’s direction, HELIX Environmental Planning (HELIX) has become an award-winning leader in environmental planning and natural resource sustainability. Having first joined the employee-owned company in 2001, he became Chief Executive Officer in 2008 and has since shepherded HELIX into an era of growth and expansion.

Michael ensures that HELIX provides every client with high-quality service, personalized attention, and creative solutions. He also serves as a senior project manager and remains, like all HELIX senior leaders, directly involved with clients and projects.

For more than 30 years, Michael has been providing outstanding environmental consulting services to clients, drawing from a rich background that combines environmental science, human geography, economics, and engineering. His work encompasses water and wastewater conveyance, storage and treatment; transportation facilities (e.g., heavy rail, airport, highway, and transit); utility corridors (e.g., pipeline, transmission line, and outfall); military operations and construction projects, and coastal development.

After graduating with an engineering degree, Michael admits that he found his way into environmental planning essentially by accident: the “environmental” section directly followed “engineering” in his local newspaper’s Help Wanted listings. He never looked back.

Michael holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Dartmouth College, and a master’s in geography from San Diego State University. He is a member of the Association of Environmental Professionals, American Public Works Association, National Association of Environmental Professionals, and American Society of Civil Engineers.
